Navigating the Confusion

Much of the confusion comes from the distraction of developmental and academic milestones. While these milestones serve as useful markers to indicate where you are, they don’t tell you how to reach your destination or how to get back on track if you’ve gone off course.

Often, the eagerness to achieve milestones is at the expense of establishing a solid foundation.  When this happens the  students develop splinter skills—abilities that appear to signal progress but are actually disingenuine and rely heavily on compensations that tire the child out.

For example:

A child struggling with directionality might learn tricks like using their hands to form the word “bed” to differentiate between “b” and “d” while reading.
However, this strategy doesn’t translate to other contexts, such as reading an analog clock, accurately following left/right directions, or executing dance moves.

Splinter skills may look like progress, but they require significant effort and don’t demonstrate true mastery. When these students face new situations that require applying the skill in a broader context, the cracks begin to show.
